Prior to law school, James received an undergraduate degree in International Relations, with a minor in Economics from the University of British Columbia. While at UBC, James volunteered for the UBC Learning Exchange outreach centre in Vancouver's downtown east side, where he taught free voice and guitar lessons to their clients.
